C started around FORTRAN, BASIC... Even though all of those languages died. C is still around. It is widely used in the programming sector and ranks very close to Java.
Many applications are still being built in the C++ language.
As a computer Science major, this is the first language that I came to learn. Even though, I call it the first true programming language in the world, C++ has defects just like every other programming languages.
I get more frustrated coding in C++ than coding in Java. There are so many errors that may evade a C++ programmers such as pointers... Even that seems a little minor. Sometimes, I spend hours trying to figure out what could be wrong in a code that seems perfect and should run fine.
C++ is faster than Java, and is still the language of choice for embedded systems such as a radio, microwave or any other small machines.
The ending note is C++ is a great language to learn as an introductory course in Computer Science. It is the inspiration to all the other great programming languages such as C#, Java, Objective-C...
